Compassion Fatigue and Burnout in the Legal Profession

Dr. Julia Persike, Wisconsin Lawyers Assistance Program

Most of us are familiar with the terms Compassion Fatigue, Vicarious Trauma, Correctional Fatigue, Secondary Trauma and Occupational Burnout. But do those terms really apply to the legal profession? During this interactive presentation, participants will explore the historical evolution of burnout-related conditions and their impact on the legal profession.  Participants will learn how to identify burnout symptomology and compassion fatigue risk factors. Lastly, participants will learn practical prevention tips and skill sets including a daily gratitude practice, defensive pessimism, resilience, meaning and purpose and well-being. Participants can expect a collaborative learning environment with opportunities to share personal examples, ask questions and win prizes (WisLAP swag/merchandise).
