Early Intervention in Criminal Court in Milwaukee

Presenters:  Tony White and Tom Potter, Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office, will be joined by an attorney from the State Public Defender's Office

This panel discussion will focus on the charging process in the Milwaukee County DA's office as well as potential ways for the private bar to advocate for Early Interventions in criminal matters that have not yet been charged. Most Early Interventions are handled by processes run by the SPD but these avenues of pushing a possible criminal referral towards a diversion or DPA are available to all. This will be a discussion with the DAs and SPD attorneys who run the EI program and will provide insight on how private bar practitioners can intervene at earlier stages in the process on behalf of their clients. There will also be a discussion from a historical perspective describing how the charging process in the DA's office has evolved over the past 20 years and bring many practitioners who maybe had more experience with the charging conferences years ago up to speed on how it's being done now.
